Sasha Fierce ("Diva")
The
music video for “Diva” is conceptually similar to that for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" in the
sense that it was filmed in black and white and shows Knowles as alter ego Sasha Fierce. In both, she dons her metal glove and performs edgy choreography
with two back-up dancers in leotards. E!
Online commented that the video was "all about being gritty and edgy, like strutting
around a downtown L.A. warehouse in crazy designer fashion and chewing
bubblegum. Hard-core style"(http://www.webcitation.org/624yQ1ad2). I think a purpose of the
video is to display Beyoncé and Sasha’s “ghetto” edge, since the title and
theme of the song are about earning power and being
the "number one diva in the game". The video begins with a
dictionary definition of the word “diva” before cutting to a parking lot
outside a warehouse. Then, wearing a pair of "dangle shades", Knowles
walks past a car full of mannequin parts. Such concealment of the eyes
indicates that the video and song’s purpose is to express the commercialized Beyoncé
image, contrasting from the exposed Beyoncé that I Am… brings out. At the end of the song, Knowles walks back to the
parking lot after her dancing sequence. She lights up a cigar and throws the
lighter into the car, letting it explode, showing her “Sasha Fierce” attitude
